Intelligent Vehicle Systems (IVSs) employing vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications harness the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to create a safer, smarter and more efficient transportation network. The rapid growth in transportation needs and car ownership has led to a severe increase in road traffic which has generated a number of social and economic problems: congestion of road transportation networks, environmental hazards and above all traffic accidents. . Governments and automotive companies are responding by making the reduction of vehicular fatalities a top priority.
The main objective of this proposal is to design, analyze and evaluate a new generation inter-vehicle communication system to instantly disseminate, hover and route critical safety information to vehicles and emergency services. Such a system will facilitate the use of ICTs in the road transportation system to bring major improvements in terms of driving safety and comfort. The system can be used to prevent traffic accidents, mitigate their effect when they do occur and also accommodate services such as traffic monitoring, text measaging, teleconferencing, music downloading and roadside e-advertisements. The European Commission through the Esafety and Intelligent Car Initiatives supports the use of ICTs to improve road safety by funding a number of projects. A major objective of this project is to equip local institutions with the necessary knowledge and expertise to respond to such calls.
